New Year's resolutions have waned. The treadmill sits idle, taking up space in your family room. The athletic club membership card is drawing dust in the desk drawer. You were determined to get back in shape, to harden up those thighs and calf muscles and to lose those extra 30 pounds. After all, you weren’t getting any younger. Don’t be too harsh on yourself. New Year's resolutions are worthwhile goals. We want to do something good for ourselves, but in our eagerness, we tend to set our sights too high and miss our target; then we get discouraged and give up when we don’t see immediate results.

Celebrations are a time to gather with friends and family, but social activities can be stressful. You overeat. You don't get enough sleep. You forget to take your medications. You ignore your teeth. You lock horns.
We have a few tips to help you de-stress.
Exercise. Take a walk around the block, or shop and walk at the local indoor mall.
Sleep. If you know you will be up late, grab a 20-minute nap during the day. Unwind for 30 minutes, and avoid heavy foods and alcohol before bedtime.
Medicate. Write a reminder and post it where you will see it so that you don't forget to take your meds. If you're travelling, place reminders in your luggage or program your cell phone.
Eat wisely. Eat a healthy snack before you go to the celebration. Be careful at the buffet if you have food allergies; ASK what the ingredients are. Take small servings, and start with the fruits, salads and veggies. Trade off a tempting food: Skip the dinner roll, and eat the slice of apple pie. Remember, you don't have to taste everything.
Brush. Tuck a tiny, inconspicuous, waterless toothbrush containing a drop of toothpaste into your handbag or coat pocket.
Simplify. Tell yourself it's okay not to do everything, whether it's decorating, cooking or helping with chores. Ask for help; someone will be delighted to lick th...
